What are exactly are car electrics?

A car's internal electrical system is much like the circulatory system of a person. Blood is what transports nutrients throughout the human body, while voltage is the lifeblood of the vehicle. A car's electrical system is composed of several sub-electrical systems such as the fuse box, heater and alternator which communicate with each other through the wiring harness.

It’s relatively common that electrical faults are linked to vehicles fuses. Each fuse in a vehicle has a different function and they are designed to blow if the current flowing through it exceeds a certain limit. A vehicle’s fuse is made of a core metal element and two terminals. The core metal element is made up of a highly resistive material that produces heat when electrical current flows through it. Once a dangerously high amount of current flows through it the fuse is blown, the whole sub-system system of the car’s electrics will shut down, protecting both the car and the owner or any potential danger.

Our electricians are equipped with the latest fault finding and diagnostic equipment which enables us to retrieve fault codes from your vehicle and establish exactly what the fault is. Vehicle electrics are highly specialist field and many technical faults associated with modern cars can be linked to its electrics. The technology in modern cars have developed massively in recent years meaning that regular vehicle mechanics may not be equipped  to diagnose and fix faults the traditional way.  Vehicle electrics can cause faults in systems such as internal and exterior lighting, locking system and a faulty alternator can cause your vehicle to stop dead in its tracks.

Unfortunately, electrical faults can have domino effect your vehicle. For example during the winter months, cold weather can result in your car not being able to produce a spark to ignite the engine. This is an issue which can be present in both newer and older car models. It’s the main role of a vehicle’s alternator to ensure the vehicle’s battery remains charged therefore a faulty alternator would consequently result in electrical faults throughout your vehicle. Any changes to your vehicles electrics other than the alternator wouldn’t solve the issue and electrical problems would continue to persist with your vehicle.  This can be a very time-consuming and expensive endeavour for Ilford residents who don’t have the correct equipment and knowledge to diagnose the issue.

So if a new warning light has appeared on your dashboard and you don’t know what it means or if you want a general service on your vehicle, contact CEM Electrical contractors today.
